To enhance student safety, Newport-Mesa Unified School District has established Board Policy (BP) 5142.04 - Bicycles and E-Bikes, effective starting in the 2026-27 school year.  Please refer to the Bike Safety webpage for additional information.

For elementary and middle school students (TK-8), e-bikes and e-motos are strictly prohibited on school property. High school students (9-12) may possess e-bikes on campus, though e-motos remain prohibited for all grade levels.

Mandatory safety education is required for everyone. High school and middle school students must complete online CHP safety training and pass a quiz using their NMUSD login, while elementary students will participate in age-appropriate "Walk ‘N Rollers" training during the school day.

Please remember our essential rules: 

• Helmets are mandatory
• Bikes must be walked while on campus 
• E-bikes must be charged at home; school outlets are not available for charging.

Failure to follow these rules may lead to the revocation of riding permits.

Steps to be taken for High School students planning on riding an E-bike or bicycle to school:

1. Take the CHP Electric Bicycle Safety and Training Course
2. Take the CHP Electric Bicycle Safety Quiz  
   • You must use your NMUSD Google account to take the quiz.  
3. At school registration in August, you will receive a permit sticker if the above have been completed

Steps to be taken for Middle/Intermediate students planning on riding a bike to school:

1. Take the CHP Bicycle Safety Course
2. Take the CHP Bicycle Safety Course Quiz  
   • You must use your NMUSD Google account to take the quiz.
3. At school registration, you will receive a permit sticker if the above have been completed.
