Our Commitment to Excellence: WASC Accreditation

Costa Mesa Middle and High School is proud to be accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This accreditation is a vital process that demonstrates our school's commitment to providing a high-quality education for every student.

What is WASC and Why is it Important?

WASC is one of six regional accrediting associations in the United States. Earning WASC accreditation is a mark of quality that affirms our programs meet rigorous, research-based standards. This accreditation is important for several reasons:

  • Ensures Quality: It certifies that our school is a trustworthy institution for student learning and is dedicated to ongoing improvement.

  • Validates Credits: It ensures that the credits and diplomas our students earn are recognized by other educational institutions, including colleges, universities, and military academies.

  • Fosters Improvement: The accreditation cycle is not just a one-time event; it's an ongoing process that pushes us to continually reflect, grow, and enhance our programs to better serve our students.

The WASC Self-Study: A Reflection of Our Community

A key part of the accreditation process is the Self-Study (CLICK HERE to view), a comprehensive, in-depth report created by our entire school community. This document is a powerful tool for self-reflection that allows us to celebrate our strengths and identify clear goals for the future.

We are proud that our Self-Study was a truly collaborative effort, built on input from:

  • Classified and Certificated Staff: Every member of our team had a voice in evaluating our programs and practices.

  • Students, Parents and Community: We gathered essential data and perspectives from our families and community partners through groups like the School Site Council (SSC), English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Tier 1 Team (PBIS), Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), and student leadership groups like the Associated Student Body (ASB).

  • School-Wide Data: Our Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) and survey process, along with the California Healthy Kids Survey to staff, students, and community members informed our Self-Study. Additionally, data from standardized tests  such as CAASPP and ELPAC, student grades, the CDE Dashboard, and other sources where utilized within the Self-Study.

By bringing all of these voices and data points together, our Self-Study provides an honest and complete picture of our school and our goals for continuous improvement.

Welcoming the WASC Visiting Committee

As the next step in our accreditation cycle, Costa Mesa Middle and High School is hosting a WASC Visiting Committee from October 26-29. This team of professional educators is visiting our campus to validate the findings of our Self-Study. During their visit, they will engage with students, staff, and parents, visit classrooms, and review our programs. Their visit and feedback are essential in helping us finalize our school-wide action plan for the coming years.
