Visual & Performing Arts

Explore the elements of Art and principles of Design through a variety of art projects. Express yourself creatively through 2D and 3D projects such as graphite drawing, painting, mosaics, jewelry, and printmaking and more.

Students learn the techniques of playing a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument and reading music. This is a performance class. There will be 2-3 performances throughout the year. Previous experience is not necessary.

Prerequisite: Teacher approval required

Students must have a year or more of previous experience, such as Elementary School after school band or CMMS Beginning Band to qualify. These students should have experience reading music as well. There will be 5-6 performances throughout the year.

Students must have at least 2 years or more of previous experience, be strong music readers and must be in 8th grade.  This is a very active performing class.  There will be approximately 30 – 75 performances throughout the year.  Students sign up for 0 & 1st period classes.  There will be some afterschool or evening practices.   All 8th grade students must have Mrs. Gilboe’s approval/signature to sign up.

This is a very active performing ensemble that incorporates dance with color guard equipment such as flags, sabres and rifles.  The group is a part of the Marching Band in the fall and Winter Guard for the rest of the year.  The group performs and competes in 30 – 40 performances throughout the year.  Dance experience is beneficial, but no prior experience is required.  There will be after school & evening practices.  Students sign up for 0 & 1st period classes.  

Students learn the techniques of playing string instruments and reading music.  This is a performance class. There will be 2-3 performances throughout the year.  Previous experience is not necessary.

Students must have a year or more of previous experience, such as private lessons, Elementary School orchestra or CMMS string class to qualify.  These students should have experience reading music as well.  There will be 3-4 performances throughout the year.  

Students will learn the basic of guitar playing and music reading. Students will learn the parts of the guitar, music notation (tablature and classical), note and chord reading and to expose students to different styles of guitar playing. Students will perform individually, in small groups, and as a class.

Welcome to the world of TV/Film/Stage Acting & Improvisation. Whether you have performing experience or not, this class will develop your communication skills & confidence. Projects will cover the basics of Comedy, Suspense, Drama, and Adventure as you work with other students learning a wide variety of techniques such as stage combat, movie monologues and improvisation.

In middle school dance, students will learn to apply choreographic principles, processes, and skills to create and communicate meaning through dance.  They will critically assess and derive meaning from works of dance and respond orally and in writing.  Lastly, students will demonstrate movement skills, process sensory information, and describe movement using proper dance vocabulary.

The Maverick Boys Chorus and Maverick Girls Chorus classes are open to any 7th or 8th grader student.  The courses offer students the opportunity to develop their music reading skills and enhance their vocal technique.  These classes present a major performance in the fall and spring semesters and also perform at various events on and off campus.  Our chorus classes prepare students to continue through Mesa’s various levels of choir during their middle and high school years.

Concert Choir is open to students in grades 8 and above.  The course continues to develop music reading skills and vocal technique.  This group rehearses various styles and genres of music and performs several times a year, both on and off campus.  8th graders must have previous choir experience (at Mesa or another school) or permission from the instructor.
