A little bit about me...

My name is Jean Shanley.  It is my good fortune and great pleasure to be charged with the awesome responsibility of helping you successfully make the transition from elementary to middle school and beyond to high school.  The middle school years are a time of tremendous growth and change for a young person.  I recognize this so I would like to share some strategies that can help you be a success.  But first, some information about myself, my classroom management beliefs, what to expect in the online course, and my expectations for you.  We have an exciting and dynamic year planned in our Basic Skills classroom!

Costa Mesa High School is my alma mater.  I have lived in the community for most of my life and raised my family here – my children also attended CMHS.  I received my undergraduate degree from Concordia University, where I also completed my Multiple Subjects Credential.  I earned my Special Education Credential through the Orange County Consortium District Intern Program.   I completed a Masters of Arts in Teaching with an emphasis in educational technology through National University.  As you can see, I love school!  When I am not teaching or learning, I enjoy hiking and camping with my wonderful husband, going to the beach, or just relaxing with a good book.  I have five fabulous adult children and six grandchildren that are my joy.  We adopted a golden retriever, Lincoln, who is pretty much spoiled rotten!  We also adopted a Texas farm cat with a clipped ear.  She rules the house!

My educational philosophy is that all students want to learn and deserve an equal opportunity to excel.  My classroom management beliefs are designed to motivate my students and bring out their best – not just in school, but in their daily lives as well.  To bring that about, we will focus on the 5 R’s: respect, responsibility, resourcefulness, reflection, and reward.  We will set realistic goals and expectations together, designed to help you realize your full potential.  I expect wonderful things to happen.

There is much learning to do - I anticipate an exciting time together.  As you work your way through the course there will be many opportunities to interact with your classmates and myself.   I encourage you to do your best to get the most out of our time together!

Don’t hesitate to contact me for assistance or if you have a suggestion that you would like to share.  I check my email throughout the day and can be reached at jshanley@nmusd.us.  If you prefer to contact me by telephone, I can be reached at 714.424.8742 before or after school and during my prep period.
