9th - 11th graders were honored in our CMHS Scholar Rangers award ceremony May 24th.  Performing Arts nominees included Zaid Batarseh, Gustavo Ruiz, Liam Cavanaugh and Stephanie Windsor.  Medallions winners were Cole Jackson & Esperanza Hart.  Esperanza was the plaque winner as the top CMHS Performing Arts Scholar this year.  Congrats to all ! 

Terry & Zaid perform as part of the Cerritos College Honor Band


Terry Cowley, trombone & Zaid Batarseh, clarinet (pictured with Kansas State University Director of Bands,  Dr. Frank Tracz & Cerritos College Director of Bands, David Betancourt) were chosen to be a part of the Cerritos College Honor Band.  The group rehearsed throughout the week and then performed at the Burnight Theater on the campus of Cerritos College on Thursday, May 25th.  The guys said they had a great time and learned a lot .  Thank you for representing CMHS !



Thanks to all of the Jazz Band members, band member volunteers & parents, participating jazz bands and adjudicators who helped to make our 2nd Annual MESA Jazz Festival such a success !  Both Jazz Bands put on great performances as well, both earning a "Superior" ratings by the judges.  Jazz Band II soloists, Heyward Bradford and Travis Campbell and Jazz Band I soloists Casey Campbell and Liam Cavanaugh were awarded outstanding soloists by the judges as well.  Great Job Everyone !

Both Jazz Bands put on great performances and had a great day at the Corondo Jazz Festival.  Outstanding solo certificates were won by Casey Campbell, Stephanie Windsor & Gustavo Ruiz for Jazz Band I & Heyward Bradford, Hartley Tran & Landon Stein for Jazz Band II.  Casey Campbell also earned overall outstanding soloist for the division in the entire festival.  Great job everyone !

Jazz Cabaret was a SWINGIN' success !

Thank you to all of the Jazz Band members, the parents who organized, set up and implemented all of the food, tables & reservations and the student hosts who worked at this year's Jazz Cabaret !  The four concerts all went extremely well and a good time was had by all.  The Jazz Bands put on some great performances !

We are "Drummin' Up Business" with our 2017 CMHS Drumline

The CMHS Drumline got off to a good start at their first ADLA competition on March11th @ Marina H.S. earning 3rd place.  The judges were excited to see more of our show, as we only performed the first act.  Thanks to the parents who came out to help and let's keep on WORKING drumline ! Jazz Band has a great week of performances !

Mesa's Jazz did not rest during the President's Break as they performed in two festivals and a community event.  The Jazz Band earned Superior ratings in both festivals from the judges.  The rhythm section was also awarded outstanding section in both festivals as well.  The Music Festivals event also awarded outstanding soloists awards to Nancy Le on alto sax, Stephanie Windsor on guitar and Casey Campbell on piano.  The Vanguard Jazz Festival event also awarded outstanding soloists to Gustavo Ruiz on trombone, Stephanie Windsor on guitar and Casey Campbell on piano.  The week was capped off with a community performance at the CM Baha'i center's event.  Great job to all !

Mesa Band Members perform in 2017 Chapman University Honor Band

On Saturday, February 4th, 2017 CMHS Advanced Band members Han Nguyen - percussion, Ethan Gay - euphonium, Gustavo Ruiz - trombone and  Jean-Paul Trujillo - flute performed as members of the Chapman University Honor Band.  The quartet went through all day rehearsals, along with other Orange County honor band students in preparation for the evening concert at the new Musco Center on the campus of Chapman University.  The students had a great experience and the group sounded amazing !

The Good Times Rolled on our trip to New Orleans

The Costa Mesa & Huntington Beach Band students and parents had a great trip to New Orleans this spring!  We certainly got to embrace all of the sights, sounds and tastes of "The Big Easy"!  So much history and culture in New Orleans to take in, from The French Quarter to a Plantation, from Preservation Hall to a swamp on the bayou, from the mighty Mississippi on a steamboat to the incredible array of Jazz Music the city is known for.

District String Festival

Mesa had a great showing at the District String Festival @ Corona del Mar H.S. on Tuesday, March 29th.  Our 44 musicians were well prepared and did a great job performing their selections.  So proud of our students on our first time at this festival !

Congrats to Han, Gustavo & Ethan who spent Saturday, Feb. 28th as a part of the Chapman University H.S. Honor Band.  The boys participated in master classes, rehearsals and an final performance with other honor students from all over Southern California.  The concert was exceptional and the boys represented CMHS with pride!  Awesome job guys!

Students Enjoying The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Costa Mesa instrumental music students had the opportunity to go see the London based "Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" perform at the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Performing Arts Center through the O.C. Philharmonic's Tix-for-Teens program.  They all thoroughly enjoyed the all Mozart Concert which featured a violin concerto, piano concerto and Mozart's famous 40th Symphony.

CMHS / CMMS Instrumental Music

The Costa Mesa High School Instrumental Music Department is made up of Beginning Band, Intermediate Band, Advanced Band, Marching Band, Color Guard, Jazz Band, Drum Line, Strings and Small Ensemble student groups ranging from 7th to 12th grade.  The goal of the program is to provide a quality program for each level that uses the state music education standards and performing opportunities to enhance each student's experience.

2017 CMHS Field Show "REACH"

Welcome back everyone and get ready for a great 2017-18 school year and a great year for MARCHING BAND !  Our field show theme this year is "REACH" and it is all about positivity and reaching for your goals.  I am super excited about our program and about this year's marching band.  Everyone needs to be at band camp, as we not only will get started on our field show, but we have to get our pep tunes and pre-game show together for the CMHS football season !  We have two home football games before school even starts !  


Monday, August 21st is the first day of camp.  Marching Band registration begins at 8:30am.  Bring your camp items (instrument, water, sunscreen, tennis shoes, lunch) and drop them off in the band room.  Then take all of your pre-printed and signed registration forms and go through the registration process. Band Camp officially begins at 10am.  Lunch will be from 1pm - 2pm and the camp ends each day at 5pm.  (See full schedule on calendar)

The CMHS Drumline performed an awesome show at the American Drumline Association Championships @ Long Beach City College, earning 3rd place with the highest score this group has ever received, an 87.60 !  Congrats to all on a great season !

Color Guard earns 2nd place at their first competition for 2017 & then garners 3rd/4th in upper division

Winterguard season has begun and Costa Mesa's color guard is ready !  They did an awesome job on their first time out this season  on Saturday, Feb. 26th at the Orange Invitational.  Coach, Rhonda Choat was very pleased with their performance, as were the judges who awarded them 1st place ! The judges were also very impressed and "bumped" the team up to a more difficult division.  They have been moving up the ranks and received 3rd place at the Valencia show on April 1st and 4th at the Mayfair show on April 2nd.  Keep it up !

MESA performs with Disneyland Band @ Segerstrom Concert Hall

Nancy Le, Anna To, Zaid Batarseh & Terry Cowley performed at the Henry & Renee Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa, with the Disneyland Band on Tuesday, January 24th.  The performance was part of the Philharmonic Society's program for area 2nd graders.  Great Job ! 


Color Guard gets into the Christmas Spirit !

The color guard brought joy to a holiday event at CBI in Tustin with their performance and help!  They are definitely on Santa's "Nice List" !

Coin Wars Competition Was Good For Everyone

It was another exciting year of COIN WARS at band camp all week.  Strategies of how much money to put in the various section jars & when, and who to sabotage varied from section to section.  In the end the Clarinet/Flute Section prevailed with the highest total!  Great job to all of the sections.  Special thanks to Yvette Calendar for organizing & implementing this fundraiser ! Monies raised will go back to social events for the Marching Band !

 We are continuing the Box Top Fundraiser and are asking everyone to bring in their box tops and deposit them in the Box Top Box in the front of Mrs. Gilboe's office in the band room.  What an easy fundraiser for the band to earn money!  Thanks to Mrs. Collier for running it.  Now Everyone BRING IN YOUR BOX TOPS !!!!

How Can I Help ??? CONTRIBUTIONS !!!


The CMHS/MS Band Program cannot exist without parent contributions.  Here are some of the ways in which YOU can contribute:

1.  Donate money to the program.  (ex.  an instrument averages over $300 per instrument)

2.  Donate your talents.  (ex.  welder, seamstress, business connections, fundraising ideas, etc.)

3.  Help at events. (ex.  chaperone an event, take donations at concerts, help with concessions, work tournaments)

4.  Support your student!  (ex.  come to the concerts/events and support your students and the program)
